In order for a democracy to remain a democracy, citizens must be educated and informed. Without education and information, citizens can be manipulated by demagogues who can work the political system in such a way that a democracy ends up as a dictatorship. There are books that citizens must read to help prevent this from happening. Most of these must read books are political books, but they also cover diverse topics such as philosophy, religion, history, finance and economics. Some of these books are thousands of years old, written by kings and philosophers in ancient civilizations. They can provide information on the fundamental principles of government and taxation.

Other books explain how the United States Constitution was crafted and how the people who wrote the Constitution worked to create a representative government. Some books that are essential for a citizen to read point out how our present government follows or wanders away from the principles used by our founders when they wrote the Constitution.

An understanding of the basic principles of government can help a person decide if he or she is liberal, conservative, or middle of the road. This understanding will also help a person interpret the language used in campaign advertisements during election season, and help him or her decide which candidate truly represents his or her interests. Some books can help a citizen decipher the language of ballot issues, such as when the language is structured in such a way that casting a No vote can help the ballot issue to pass. These books can help a person decide how involved he or she wants to become in the political process. They can help a person be well informed if he or she decides to attend the caucus of a political party to help draft the party's platform.

Democratic books and Republican books explain the two party system and the philosophies of these political parties. Running a search on Tea Party books will bring up some results of books that explain how to host a tea party, but the books that a citizen must read explain the history of the Tea Party movement and its goals. They explain why members of the Tea Party are dissatisfied with the Democratic and Republican parties.
